Did a used EV1 really just sell for $465,000?

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Daily digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Old_GM_Electric_Car_sells_for_465k'; Not quite sure what to make of this, but it appears that someone in Victoria, British Columbia has just sold a 1998 GV1 for $465,000 (about $431,835 U.S.). We got a tip from Patrick J. who said that he spotted the ad but was unable to get a hold of the seller before his or her contact information was taken off the ad. Currently the listing claims the vehicle is "SOLD" and the price is the aforementioned $465K. That's quite a jump from the minimum asking price of $75,000, and maybe prom... (original story)

Economic realities push alternatives back in favor of more efficient gas engines

Filed under: Etc., MPGWhile all of the world's major automakers are continuing to develop alternative fuels and drivetrains, the current economic situation very likely means that a massive move toward non-liquid fueled cars is likely a lot further out that many of you many hope. One look at September auto sales will tell you that the entire industry is in trouble including the seemingly all powerful Toyota. As the financial system continues to struggle and unemployment climbs, people are having a harder time getting car loans as well as mortgages. If people can't afford the cars that are avail... Inaugural VW Jetta TDI cup goes to Josh Hurley

Filed under: Diesel, Volkswagen Josh Hurley leading the field at Road Atlanta The first ever season of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup wrapped up this weekend before the start of the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta. After eight races at tracks around North America since April, Josh Hurley's second place finish in the last race was enough to put him over the top for the series championship. Hurley captured the pole position for the opening race at VIRginia Internation Raceway and then ran consistently enough, including a win at Portland, to accumulate 260 points. Liam Kenney won the Road Atlant... (original story)

Citroën C5 Airdream: a large sedan under 140 g/km of CO

Filed under: Diesel, Citroen, European UnionThere's a French competitor for the all-new Opel Insignia EcoFlex. Citroën has unveiled a new version of its C5 sedan, spotting the marque's Airdream ecolabel. The C5 Airdream has the proven PSA 1.6-liter 110hp engine, which seems a little small for such a hefty vehicle, but manages to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures to keep them under 140 g/km. In France, this model qualifies for discounted taxes for businesses that use cleaner vehicles as company cars. The C5 Airdream spots electric power steering, low rolling resistance Miche... Peugeot unleashes 118 mpg HYmotion3 Compressor Concept

Filed under: Hybrid, MPG, Peugeot, On Two Wheels, Paris Motor Show Click above for more shots of the Peugeot HYmotion3 Compressor Concept We really dig Peugeot's new HYmotion3 Compressor Concept. It's got three wheels -- two up front and one in back, our preferred arrangement -- and a hybrid drivetrain. The two front wheels are independently powered by individual wheel-mounted hub motors and have no connection to the supercharged four-stroke 125cc engine that powers the rear wheel. Regenerative braking is all that provides power to the scooter's battery pack. Like the Piaggio MP3, the HYmotion... (original story)

VIDEO: Live reveal of Honda Insight and a new company blog

Filed under: Hybrid, Honda, Paris Motor Show Click for a gallery of the Honda Insight concept Honda this week launched its first blog in conjunction with the debut of the new Insight concept in Paris. If Honda's usual practice and the spy photos we've seen are any indication, the concept Insight that is on the show stand right now will be almost identical to the production model coming next spring. While the Insight's profile undoubtedly shares a lot with the Toyota Prius, it also differs in many design details. The Insight has more surface development than the Prius including the belt-line a... (original story)

Paris 2008: Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 diesel hybrid

Filed under: Diesel, Hybrid, Peugeot, Paris Motor Show Peugeot Prologue HYmotion4 Peugeot's Prologue HYmotion4 concept is in many ways the opposite of the same company's RC HYmotion4 concept. The upright crossover style Prologue is a different animal from the sleek four-door coupe. Both vehicles use the same through the road hybrid architecture but flipped front/rear. The Prologue puts the internal combustion engine up front and runs on diesel instead of gasoline with the electric motor going at the back. The diesel puts out 163 hp while the motor is limited to 27 kW. With both the engine and ... (original story)

VIDEO: Danny's Contentment talks Nuvu with Mia

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Paris Motor ShowWhile we old-fashioned, glued-to-keyboard bloggers had to wait until the official reveal to get a glimpse Nissan's latest EV concept, new-fangled video blogger Danny Fleet got actual face time with both the Nuvu and a representative from the Japanese auto maker before the Paris Motor Show even started and recorded some of the low down on the concept and the company's EV future plans with his trusty camera. He even got them to drive it a very short distance. While there weren't any "Holy Cow! Really?" moments, we did learn a bit that wasn't covere... (original story)

Glamor post of the week: BMW to become the "ecomobility" solution for the Rome Film Festival

Filed under: Etc., BMW, European UnionDo you enjoy watching stars on the red carpet? Well, BMW thinks that they can help make the stars' appearance a little greener than if they arrived in a stretched limo (even if it's hybrid). Last year BMW chose the event to promote its Hydrogen 7 flagship, but this year BMW has announced a full "fleet of models fitted with EfficientDynamics" to drive around movie starts and politicians. As we know, this name denotes a combination of the Bavarian marque's techniques to lower fuel consumption. According to BMW Italia's press release, when 2008 ends, BMW will... (original story)

In India, Hero Honda believes high fuel prices may be a blessing

Filed under: Honda, On Two Wheels, IndiaIn India, two-wheeled scooters and motorcycles are a very popular way to get around. Cars are out of the price range for many buyers, and until the Tata Nano comes out, will remain that way. Other factors are putting a crimp on the spending of many Indian households, including a huge inflation increase and the surging price of fuel. All of these things are likely to have a negative impact on the automotive sector. Some, though, believe that the two-wheeled market is set to pick up some of the slack. In fact, Hero Honda, the largest manufacturer of motorc... (original story)

Paris 2008: Wallyscar to make electric Jeep-like vehicle

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, European Union, UK, Paris Motor Show Click above for a high-res shots of the Wallyscar Izis It's pretty easy to see more than just a passing resemblance between the new Izis from Wallyscar, which is now being shown at the Paris Motor Show, and another famous vehicle. Like the original off-roading Willys, the Izis features body-on-frame architecture and a very small gasoline engine. In the case of the Izis, that engine comes from Peugeot and displaces 1.4-liters, good enough for 75-horsepower, just a bit more than the 60 horses of the classic Willys Go Devil engine. The ... Paris 2008: smart shows off its second-gen ED

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, SMART, European Union, UK, USA, Paris Motor ShowWhile some sites are busy making fun of its name (yeah, we thought of that too... and you? Does it matter? Comments are welcome), others were busy conducting interviews with Dr. Z. in an attempt to find out when we may see the smart ED in America. The answer is that it's coming, if not next year then shortly thereafter. Daimler hopes to have 1,000 electric smarts running rather silently around the world by the end of next year, and it's distinctly possible that a portion of them will be in the U.S. This is the second-gene...
