America's latest fuel sipper: Dodge Challenger?

Filed under: MPG, Dodge, USA Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SE Our good friends over at Popular Mechanics have been on a fuel-saving tear as of late, putting the brand-new Jetta TDI up against the reigning mileage champ, the Toyota Prius, and following that comparison up with a test of Chevy's Cobalt XFE. What's the next obvious choice for a mileage run? None other than the Dodge Challenger. Wait... excuse me? The Challenger was created to burn rubber and gas, right? Sort of, as one of the reasons people will buy one is for that "I live my life one quarter-mile a... (original story)

Paris Preview: Audi A1 Sportback hybrid concept leaks out

Filed under: Hybrid, Audi, Paris Motor ShowThe leakage leading up to the Paris Motor Show continues as the first pics of the new Audi A1 Sportback have surfaced. The A1 Sportback is likely what the production version of Audi's new small car will look like when it hits the streets in 2010. The A1 is about a foot shorter than the Golf-based A3 and if this concept is any indication, it may turn out to be Audi's first hybrid. The concept uses a 150 hp version of the VW 1.4L TSI engine paired with a 27 hp hybrid system. This appears to be a new mild hybrid system that we haven't seen before from th... (original story)

Ouch. Ford truck sales drop 39.5 percent in September

Filed under: MPG, Ford, Green DailySomething tells me that the more fuel-efficient Ford models can't get to America soon enough for Ford dealers. The news out today is that FoMoCo's U.S. sales dropped like a Mike Gravel-thrown rock - 34 percent - in September. Truck sales were down 39.5 percent last month (22.3 percent so far in 2008) and car sales fell 19 percent in September (6.3 percent this year). While part of the problem is that Ford's gas-hungry line-up just isn't selling when gas prices are still quite high, the overall economic situation in the U.S. means that a lot of customers can't... AltCar 2008: Terry Tamminen says green is the new red, white and blue

Filed under: AutoblogGreen Exclusive, Santa Monica Alt Car ExpoHere's a tip for Terry Tamminen: retire the joke already. You know, the one about Arnold Schwarzenegger and whoever just introduced you as a speaker, how they were pumping iron together back in the day? We heard it about Ed Begley at the 2006 Alt Car Expo and then again at AFVI in 2007. When Tamminen told it again at this year's Alt Car Expo (listen to the audio clip below), I started to worry that he might not have anything new to say at all. But, while Tamminen is still a strong supporter of hydrogen, he didn't promote it quite a... (original story)
